Slangs and phrases were a huge part of this decade. Take these slangs out of the Nigerian vocabulary and you’re left with dull, bland words devoid of the authentic Nigerian passion. 

The Nigerian social media space saw tremendous growth in this decade and with it came the rise of internet slangs. Today, we’re giving you our favourite internet slangs of the decade.

  1. 1 I can't kill myself


    Although this phrase attained a higher level of popularity after Timaya featured it in his track, "I Can't Kill Myself", the phrase has been around for decades.

    Even with all the struggles, Nigerians cannot kill themselves.

  2. 2 Gbe bodi eh!


    This was popularized by Zlatan and is mostly used by a dancer who wants to ginger another. It could also be used to elicit some kind of movement.

    Last Bustop! Oya everybody gbe bodi eh!



  3. 3 Gbas Gbos


    Nigeria is a dramatic nation and this slang perfectly captures the idea of dramatic Nigerian squabbles. Gbas refers to a punch from a boxer and Gbos is the retaliation.

    Example;

    Nigerian lawmakers are dishing gbas gbos.



  4. 4 Wetin Musa no go see for gate


    This phrase comes out to play something incredulous happens. It could be reformed in various ways.

    Wetin Cardi B no go see for Lagos?

    Or

    Wetin Bobrisky and Tonto Dikeh no go see for Dubai?



  5. 5 Turnioninown


    This seemingly meaningless phrase is actually "Turning on its own". It originated from a Twitter video where a vehicle appeared to be moving by itself. This is applied to things that can't be controlled.

    Example;

    My relationship is turnioniown.



  6. 6 Sho mo age mi?


    Nigerians are big on age and respect. In 2018, this phrase was coined by an internet sensation who responded to everything with "sho mo age mi?".

    It was quickly picked up by celebrities.

    Example.

    My girlfriend just asked me to loosen her braids. Sho mo age mi?



  7. 7 Na dem dey rush us


    If there is one thing Nigerians are very good at, it is stuffing their shoulders with pads to appear larger than they really are.

    This phrase came out of a movie where an actor, who wanted the love of a woman, declared that he was already being pursued by other women.

    Nigerians picked up this term and soon, every tweet was branded with "Na dem dey rush us".

    Example,

    As a member of the SBA, na dem dey rush us.



  8. 8 Inside life


    It may take a whole lot to shock Nigerians but just when you think you've seen it all, something else happens.

    'Inside life' is used when something shocking is discovered.

    Example;

    Did she cook a whole stolen goat? Inside life.
